Ofloxacin

What is Ofloxacin used for?

Ofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It treats bacterial infections including pneumonia, bronchitis exacerbations, urinary tract infections, prostatitis, skin/soft tissue infections, gonorrhea, chlamydia, pelvic inflammatory disease, and gastroenteritis. This medicine is also used topically for conjunctivitis. It is used for otitis externa as well. For off-label purposes, it is used for traveler’s diarrhea, plague, or anthrax.

How does Ofloxacin work?

Ofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymes. It is useful in inhibiting replication, repair, and transcription of the bacteria DNA. This bactericidal action targets both Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens, found in tissues like lungs, prostate, and urine.

How long does Ofloxacin take to act?

Peak plasma levels are achieved in 1-2 hours post-oral dose. Improvement in symptoms is visible in 48 to 72 hours for most infections. Bactericidal effects are rapid. The complete treatment duration depends on the infection severity and site.

How long does the treatment with Ofloxacin last?

In acute infections such as gonorrhea or UTI, the treatment can take 3 to 7 days, while 7 to 14 days in complicated infections such as pneumonia or prostatic. The course of treatment is for short term and not long term because of the risk of resistance. Repeat dose is as per doctor’s recommendation only in case of reinfection.

What are the Ofloxacin benefits?

This medicine works against bacterial infection in the urinary system, skin, respiratory system, and other organs. It offers high tissue penetration in lungs and prostate, delivering relief and treatment. Take the medicine once or twice daily. It acts against Pseudomonas.

What is the Ofloxacin dosage and administration?

For adults, the oral or IV dose every 12 to 24 hours is 200-400 mg. In an uncomplicated UTI or gonorrhea case, one needs to take a 200-400 mg single dose. Duration of treatment is 3 to 14 days per infection. Take medicine with or without food. Drink plenty of water. Dose may be adjusted in kidney problems.

What are the Ofloxacin side effects?

Common side effects are nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, or insomnia. Serious but rare effects are tendon rupture (like Achilles), peripheral neuropathy, QT prolongation, C. difficile colitis, photosensitivity, or hypoglycemia. CNS effects are rare such as seizures or psychosis.

What are precautions and contraindications of Ofloxacin?

Contraindications are quinolone hypersensitivity and myasthenia gravis. Avoid steroids in case of tendon or muscle risks. Dosage could be adjusted for elderly, or those with kidney issues, diabetes, seizures, G6PD deficiency, and pregnancy (Category C).
