Albiglutide

What is Albiglutide used for?

This medicine is an antidiabetic medicine that manages type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults. It’s primarily recommended to improve blood sugar control when diet and exercise are not doing enough work. Albiglutide can be easily used as an add-on therapy with other oral medications like metformin, sulfonylureas, or insulin, depending on patients’ glycemic index. However, this medicine should not be used for type 1 diabetes or for treating diabetic ketoacidosis.

How long does Albiglutide take to act?

In the first week of treatment, it will start lowering the blood sugar levels. With 2-4 weeks of consistent use, maximum glucose control will be achieved, as steady-state plasma levels are attained.

How long will the treatment with Albiglutide last?

This medicine is designed for long-term management of type 2 diabetes. Hence, the duration of the treatment cannot be specific; it depends on the patients’ response and the physician's assessment. Therapy will continue as long as blood sugar targets are met, the patient’s tolerance level is well, and benefits are showing.

What are the main benefits of Albiglutide treatment?

It helps to lower HbA1c levels, the risk of hypoglycemia when used without insulin, supports stable fasting and post-meal glucose hit (controlling it), reduces the daily injection hassle, and improves patients’ compliance.

This treatment is especially beneficial for people who struggle with daily injection regimes and are looking for a simpler option, as only one dose is needed weekly.

What is the dosage and administration of Albiglutide?

The starting dose recommended by doctors is usually 30 mg, once weekly by subcutaneous injection. The dose can be increased to 50 mg once weekly if additional glycemic control is needed.

This dose can be administered with or without food, and through the abdomen, thighs, or upper arm. Need to be taken on the same day each week. If a dose is missed, take it within 3 days; otherwise, skip and resume the regular schedule.

What are the side effects of Albiglutide?

Generally, nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, reactions in the injection area, and upper respiratory tract infections are common with this medicine. Headaches, dizziness, and glycemia are less common.

Beware of serious side effects like pancreatitis, severe allergic reactions, and gastrointestinal reactions.

What are Albiglutide’s precautions and contraindications?
