What is Dalbavancin used for?
This medicine treats ABSSSI (acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections) originating from susceptible gram-positive bacteria, even from Streptococcus and Staphylococcus aureus species. It is a powerful antibacterial agent.
How does Dalbavancin work?
Dalbavancin binds to D-alanyl-D-alanine terminus of cell wall precursors, restricting synthesis of bacterial cell wall. It then goes to prevent the cross-linking, which otherwise keeps the cell wall intact. Thus, it kills bacterial cells and disintegrates permeability of the bacterial cell membrane and RNA synthesis.
How long does Dalbavancin take to act?
Dalbavancin's positive effects occur within a few days. The medicine inhibits bacterial multiplication and, thanks to the long half-life, provides long-term relief from bacterial infections.
How long does the treatment with Dalbavancin last?
One to two doses of the intravenous liquid are given with a one-week interval between the doses. Thus, the antibiotic effect lasts for 2 to 5 weeks. In some cases, long-term treatment is recommended by doctors, especially for people with severe infections.
What are the Dalbavancin benefits?
The medication fast-paces treatment for bacterial infections and involves short-term intake (one or two times a week) due to longer half-life. It has a reliable antibacterial effect, working better than many traditional antibiotic medicines.
The standard dose in people with normal kidney function is a single 1500 mg IV infusion or 1000 mg IV in the beginning. Then a week after the first dose, 500 mg IV is provided intravenously. Those with kidney disease may need dosage adjustments.
What are the Dalbavancin side effects?
Common side effects include nausea, headache, fever, diarrhoea, rash, and itching. In rare cases, allergic reactions may occur.
What are Dalbavancin's precautions and contraindications?
It is advisable to keep a check of symptoms if any, resulting from the administration of Dalbavancin. Use with caution in people with renal problems, and monitor dosage. Contraindications include people with hypersensitivity to other glycopeptides and Dalbavancin.
